What we collect

To create an account we collect a username, display name and password (stored as an Argon2 hash — we never see or keep the plain text). When you use Synapse we store the notes, folders and comments you and your course group write, and the study material (flashcards, quizzes, summaries) generated from them.

How AI features work

Flashcards, quizzes, summaries and chat answers are generated from the notes in your own workspace only — never from another course group's notes, and never used to train a model. Generation is sent to Anthropic's API when that feature is enabled; if it isn't, requests are answered locally and nothing leaves our servers. AI-generated study material is private to the person who generated it, even when the source notes are shared with a whole course group.

Sessions and cookies

Signing in sets one httpOnly session cookie, which JavaScript in the browser cannot read. We use it to keep you signed in and for no other purpose — no advertising cookies, no third-party trackers.

Who can see your data

Notes are visible to the members of the workspace they belong to, and to no one else. AI conversations, generated flashcards, quizzes and summaries are private to the account that created them, even within a shared workspace. We do not sell data to third parties, and do not share it beyond what running the service requires (hosting, database and, where enabled, the AI provider above).

Data retention and deletion

Content persists for as long as your account or workspace exists. Deleting a note or leaving a workspace removes your access to it going forward; contact us if you need data removed from backups or need your account closed entirely.
